The Bridge Company

Case 1: Bright Lights, Big City

The first case of the campaign begins with Awil-shamash, champion of Marduk, asking the Bridge Company to help him locate two lost petitioners from Azuth’s domain on behalf of a friend of his (who wants them returned as quickly as possible to avoid censure for losing track of them in the first place). The petitioners are She-Who-Heals-Walks-By-Sun-Dances-By-Moon, a half-elf, and Exacting Rightness of Purpose, a lantern archon.

The petitioners in question accidentally wandered into Sigil, Awil-shamash explains, through a one-way portal located by a shrine to Mystra in the Market Ward. The PCs investigate, and after bribing an incense seller nearby about any lantern archons he might have seen, are directed to Remy Tenfingers at The Patched Boot, a rough establishment in the Market Ward.

The Bridge Company investigates the Patched Boot. A few vrocks are playing a variation of the knife game which Fenton is drafted for—though he distracts them via a muttered word in a language no one else in establishment had ever heard before…

Though Remy does not respond directly, the Bridge Co. is directed to Kaleidoscope, a lounge frequented by Sensates, where they find Exacting Rightness of Purpose who is currently being used as a sort of combination fancy lamp and one-”man” band. ERoP is shoved into a Bag of Holding by Mae, Fenton argues with the bouncer while Fir saps him, Dasyo makes an unlikely friend, and the proprietor of Kaleidoscope gets seriously annoyed that her entertainment is missing…

Interlude - Stranger than Kindness

Eight months before the events in Bright Lights, Big City Part 1, Mr. Bridge asks Dasyo, Firgonwe, and Orien(ne) to look into an unusual series of break-ins in the home of Factor Johannes “Jack” Ingram, a factor of The Fated.

After unsuccessfully attempting to break into Factor Ingram’s house before he returns - thwarted by his dwarf housemaid, Eunice - the company representatives meet with Factor Ingram. He explains a series of unusual break-ins. Someone is breaking into his house at night—but not to steal anything. Rather, the intruder seems to simply move his things around or perform services for him. For example: darning his socks, leaving a fruit basket, repairing a broken banister, and leaving a series of cryptic and often misspelled notes in a bizarre and cryptic hand (generally single words on a page such as “COMPASHUN” “FURGIVNUZ” “FIRGIV HIMM”). Ingram is convinced this is some sort of blackmail attempt; after all, a high-ranking member of the Fated can’t accept charity, after all.

The truth is much, much stranger.

During the night, while the party investigates, over a hundred cranium rats break into the apartment and begin washing Factor Ingram’s dishes. (One of the bowl is dropped and summarily mended.) Dasyo and Firgonwe discover them in the scullery (after Firgonwe has an encounter with a group of upstanding Sigilian citizens). The rats panic, and rather than attacking or enslaving our heroes, they panic and flee into the drain (but not before Dasyo and Firgonwe capture a few). In another section of the house, Orien discovers them pulling a blanket over Factor Ingram (who fell asleep at his desk earlier in the evening).

The following day, the Bridge Company investigators follow tracks the rats into some tunnels under Sigil… where they discover the warrens where the cranium rats have been hiding and hatching their oddly benevolent plans…

Bright Lights,Big City Part 2

A vrock named Marenka makes a deal with Fenton—a fascinate for four of Remy Tenfingers’ fingers. The deal changes and it becomes three fingers, because Marenka gets hungry and eats one.

She-Who-Heals Walks-by-Sun Dances-by-Moonis found at the Gatehouse. She feels compelled to address the suffering of the people in Sigil directly. The PCs direct her to Awil-Shamash, and suggest that he take her to a temple and ask the priests there to commune with Azuth for guidance. SWH and ERoP ride off with Awil-Shamash, and the party gets an 800gp paycheck.

Cases 2 & 3: Love Conquers Most

The company returns after the conclusion of the previous case to find that there are two other cases waiting for them upon their return.

The first case is offered by a wealthy human woman named Favrielle Elgantine, who seemed to want the PCs to find proof that her dwarf husband, Trevedic, was unfaithful. Whether the proof was genuine or not, of course, seemed immaterial to her… and she was willing to pay the party quite handsomely for “proof” of his infidelity…

Mae went to Elgantine Jewelers to see Trevedic face-to-face. She inquired about a private jewel-viewing party—in order to provide a cover, of course, for getting a good picture of the fellow in order to divine on him later!

After the interview, the Company headed to the Lower Ward to inquire about their second prospective client: a man who came to the agency claiming to be ill. But why would a sick man go to a detective agency and not a surgeon or a temple?

Love Conquers Most, Part 2

In which the Bridge Company attempts to save the life of Mavros Talorcan III, but arrives some six years too late.

His younger half-brother, Ravi Talorcan, keeps kip with the Company after his brother’s death.

Love Conquers Most, Part 3

In which the PCs track down Trevedic Elgantine, who is using some sort of sensory stone-like object in the basement of a teahouse owned by Factor Necthana.

Case 4: Shadows Over Sandstone
August 7th and 14th

Firgonwe, after asking a few questions about memory cores and the Astral Planes, disappears.

The Bridge Company is hired by Captain Linnae of the Harmonium to solve a series of gruesome unsolved murders in the Sandstone District.

Pie is eaten.

Case 5: Lost and Found

The company is hired by Awil-Shamash to recover an item of his — the Horn of Hlodyn — that he suspects was stolen.

The players encounter Talliesin, The Indep Smugglers, Hamfast, Duma and Valgarde, the Thane of Hlodyn.

Blackrune challenged Valgarde to a fistfight and won not only the Horn of Hlodyn, but the thanedom itself — earning both a ceremonial helmet and the right to be called Thane of Hlodyn.

Case 6: Whispers of Bedlam

The Bridge Co. returns to Sigil to find that Ravi is missing. They find Ravi along with Chevalier Gerrard, a servant of the Emberstorm family. The noble Chevalier claims that Orienne’s family is in great danger, so the Bridge Co. goes to Bedlam.

In Bedlam, they meet up with assorted members of Orienne’s family, torture a crazy man, have an awkward family dinner, rescue her brother Bleskar from a nymph, put out some fires. In the midst of this, Orienne’s brother Desar is abducted. The fires were started by Cal Redgrin, an orc mercenary who was being possessed by a Shadow Fiend who was seemingly in cahoots with Orienne’s sister/brother Tersan and Orienne’s mother.

The city is rapidly crossing over into Pandemonium. Orienne’s father, “Duke” Hilford Emberstorm, tells the Company to escape via a hidden portal in the Citadel. The Bridge Company, Orienne’s brother Desar, and Desar’s girlfriend (?) Kulnas (and her bodyguard, Sarhad) escape, only to find themselves in…

[Interlude] In the Details

The Bridge Company and guests narrowly escape Bedlam and find themselves in the Crystal Palace of Phlegethos. Orien(ne)‘s father, “Duke” Hilford Emberstorm, has negotiated with Belial’s representatives for Orien(ne) and his family to have safe passage through Belial’s domain… unfortunately, this agreement does not cover Orien(ne)’s guests (namely, the rest of the PCs, Ravi, Kulnas, and Sarhad.

A deal is made with both Fierna and Belial; the Bridge Company will be allowed to leave freely, provided that they get rid of Azediel a troublesome cultist of Levistus. Fierna originally wanted the cultist dead; Belial’s representative in the form of Zammasir asked them to change a few (seemingly small) details.

Before they left, two of the Crystal Palace slaves had some contact with the party. One, [[:gregor darkmist | Gregor Darkmist]], made the Company an offer for his freedom. The other, Lavinia, spoke at length with Fenton about the illumians — a race of humanoids who she thought had been all killed in a genocidal war nearly twenty-five years ago.

The Company ventured across the Styx to the city of Icerazor. There they hatched a plan to slay Azediel, enlisting the aid of a few of her lieutenants, a few of her prisoners, and a crazed half-dead phoenix who really just wanted to die so it could be reborn again. Their plan succeeded, and they returned to Phlegethos. They picked up Ravi and Tessai (who at remained at the palace as collateral) and freed two of the slaves as part of the agreement. After a vote, they agreed to free Lavinia and a young elf boy, leaving Darkmist behind. . .
